First Grade

Welcome to first grade

Welcome to First Grade! We are so excited about this school year and the wonderful learning opportunities ahead!

In first grade, we focus on math, reading comprehension, phonics and decoding, and writing.

For math, our four main goals are: numbers and operations in base ten, operations and algebraic thinking, geometry, data and measurement.

For writing, we teach students to write personal narratives, opinion writing, informational writing, and realistic fiction narratives. We also look at writing mechanics and using digital tools to produce and publish writing.

With phonics and decoding, we focus on teaching students how to read using phonemic awareness and fluency.

Reading comprehension focuses on asking and answering questions, retelling stories using details and illustrations, describing characters, setting and events in a story, comparing and contrasting the adventures and experiences of characters in stories, as well as explaining the major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information.

In addition to our standards, we also have a weekly STEM lab, library, and related arts classes.

We believe that learning should be fun and engaging!
