5th Grade parents,

My name is Drew Buckner. I am the middle school band director at Signal Mountain and we would love to have your child in band in next year! We have really enjoyed speaking to your students this week at Nolan and Thrasher. Here are a few very important items to keep in mind as you are hopefully selecting “band” on your registration form!

1. Band is a class during school. We have all kinds of athletes, cheerleaders, and members of all kinds of school clubs, because of the rarity of after-school commitments.

2. It is rare (and hard) to jump into band after the 6th grade year. This is why we encourage you to give it a shot during your first year of middle school!

3. Almost all students have never played their instrument before day 1 of school in August! Therefore, don’t be nervous if you think your child has zero musical skills. The majority of parents would say the same thing about their child…

4. Band gives students a huge head start on friends. And because I see it every day, I can tell you that band is something that will hopefully make your student look forward to coming to school each day (which can be tough in middle school…) Band is about creating a family, camaraderie, and keeping our kids on the best possible path and best possible environment in school. Music in only the outlet.

5. Instrument Night!-May 15th or May 17th from 4:30pm-7:00pm - This will take place in the band room and will be the night when you will select an instrument for your child, as well as get detailed information on how to purchase or rent an instrument. (Money is NEVER a problem!) Each child will sign up for a time slot in that time frame (email to come) and receive a one-on-one session with each of our teachers and be scored on what fits them best. Afterwards, each student will get to choose their instrument and I will ensure their selection lines up with their scores (and it usually does).

6. Please do not purchase or rent an instrument until I have sent out the final roster for instruments/students and approved each students’ choices.

7. No Summer Camp - Band camp during the summer is ONLY for rising 7th and 8th grade members. All 6th grade band members will start together on day one of school! Please don't be stressed about having prior experience. 90% of the students have never played an instrument.

8. Our Program - We're very excited about having your child in the band program next year. They will quickly learn that they are a part of something very special. While they quickly make friends and begin making strange noises, they will slowly realize that they are a part of one of the most special teams on campus. Our students have a history of being the best students in the school, as well as the most decorated and accomplished band members in East Tennessee.

Please select “band” on your registration form this week and everyone will be getting another email to sign up for a time slot in May to select your instrument! In the meantime, please visit our website at Please select “band” on your registration form this week and everyone will be getting another email to sign up for a time slot in May to select your instrument!
